Sketches from the Sorolla Exhibit!!

Soooo, the Sorolla Exhibit at the San Diego Museum of Art was so amazing that I had to go back last Tuesday before it finished on Wednesday.  I spent the whole day there revisiting his amazing works as well as checking out other parts of the museum! Managed to fit in a few quick sketches as well so I could remember how he constructed his paintings and created a story with not only the characters but also with the way he composed and created light and used color.

Studying the way he paints faces in portraits- love the lighting in some of them! Top left is his self portrait, and bottom  left is from his piece titled "Another Marguerite!" I loved the girl's face- it was so haunting. I definitely didn't capture it since I scribbled it in 2 min before museum closing, but definitely worth looking up!

Sketch from his social realism piece "A Sad Inheritance!" One of my favorites.

Quick 1 minute thumbnail sketches from various paintings.

LOVED his sketches for creating his piece of Christopher Columbus! This sketch is from the final painting. I was trying to capture his smug--ish expression...

Various sketches from some of his beach paintings.  Love the way he makes skin look so wet and tangible!!

More quick 1 minute thumbnail sketches  from his paintings, the middle being "Another Marguerite!".

Pastels of the week

I went to SD this weekend to visit the Sorolla Exhibit and I cannot even begin to explain how amazing and ethereal the experience was.  Being able to look at his paintings up close and study the the individual brushstrokes and how he constructed his paintings was just mind blowing!!! I might just go down one more time before the gallery closes...

Pastels to date, more to come!

Lately,  I've been getting really into pastels, especially being inspired by Arthur Fong!! I decided I'm going to try to do a pastel a day, and so far, I've been able to hold it out.

worst for last...first sketch with pastel at Santa Monica HA.  Didn't realize the palm trees looked cut off until after I packed everything up and looked at it again later.

Yellow Mountains

This is inspired by Big Sur, a view near our camping site.  It was night time, but there were these lovely golden hills in the distance that still retained this nice yellow glow... don't know how, but it was really cool :) That and the moon.... it was just mesmerizing!

Forgot to post this, but this is from last wk! Painted by the palm tree by the lake :)

Pictures and Art from Big Sur!

A few friends and I did a short trip to Big Sur this weekend and it was amazing!! Crisp weather, beautiful scenery, and awesome FREE camping site.  It was my first time and I had been dying to go, so it was quite a refresher.  I'll have to check out the place again and do a longer trip! Below are some art I did and pictures from locations we visited! I'll upload more in another blog post perhaps!

Rainy Love

Inspired by West Lake in Hangzhou, China.  It was really misty and foggy around the entire lake the whole time we were there, and I wanted to try and illustrate something inspired by the weather.
