Updates on Thralled

This week, I worked on creating a few more concepts for refining how the water should look in the third chapter of the game when the main character Isaura enters into the slave ship through a boat.  The body water in the game represents the world of the dead, where Isaura's ghost, represented by her reflection in the water, dwells and interacts with her.  The Congolese believed that the world of the dead existed in reflective surfaces such as water and mirrors, which is why these elements are so important to them and are crucial motifs in our game as well.

playing with distortion of objects underwater!

playing around with how the surface of the water should be portrayed

Update and revision on the character! This was done a couple weeks back, but I recently enhanced Isaura even more, painting over some lower- res assets as well as also subtly defining her face a little more.

She now has two faces! One default face and one for looking down at her baby boy :)

Paintings from this Weekend

Went to a figure painting workshop and painting at Vasquez Rocks with the amazing Mike Hernandez! Overall super chill weekend.  Vasquez was kind of a struggle but thanks to Mike's help, I think i understood how to mix colors a lot better :)

Some Color Thumbnails for Thralled!

This past week,  I have been working on doing a lot of small color thumbnails for the game Thralled, to determine the look and lighting for certain environments for Chapter 3 which will take place in a slave ship.  It follows Isaura's journey as she entered through the holds of a ship through a boat, reaches the door of no return, and travels deeper into the the dark recesses of the ship, such as the masters room, crew room, and more abstract environments. Here are some concepts I did for some rooms and environments just to play around with lighting, more to come!

the holds where she enters

exploring the underwater world where her ghost counterpart lives

exploring how to depict reflections in water, which is a big motif in our game

some crappy explorations of the masters room and crew room

the dark tunnel behind the master's room where she discovers another world behind the walls

the world outside the tunnel where the ghosts of slaves trapped in the ship are swimming about

exploring concepts of the inside of an African hut where remnants of the captain of there ship are found sitting on a throne

Sunday CalTech painting

After a couple weeks of not touching oils since I was experimenting with pastels (which I still will!) I finally took out the brushes again! It felt like forever.  Went to Cal Tech and did a simple painting, focusing more on color and simplicity.  I ran out of time so  couldn't really get into details, but next time!

Sketches at the Getty Museum!

Went to the Getty yesterday with a few friends and got some awesome inspiration from galleries showcasing art from the 1600-1800's as well as the Rococo to Revolution Exhibit!! Also was able to fit in a couple quick sketches in the garden.  The lighting was super pretty but I don't think I captured it too well.  Still need to work on edge control- it's so hard to draw bushes and plants all together!

That red tree was sooo pretty!!!

For some reason, it looks a lot bluer here. But here is a sketch of my friend Wayne sketching!

Sketch at Griffith

Went on a little hike in some random area in Griffith Park yesterday and did a little sketch along the way.  I picked this tree because it had so many beautiful colors, but I don't think I captured it. It is so hard to draw trees even though they look so simple!  Bright side is that I got some brand new Rembrandt pastels that are 100 times so much more amazing then there cheap Blick student grade chalk pastels I had before.  Definitely recommend this brand!

Waterworks!

I was working at the Americana last week, and while I was eating lunch on the lawn, I couldn't help but notice the cutest little boy dancing on the fountain when the water show came up.  No one could stop him getting his groove on and it was SO cute! Had to do a quick sketch of it :)

Sketch at Del Mar

Currently home in San Diego right now, and I got to visit one of my childhood beaches, Del Mar! It was so nice to just walk around and enjoy the sea breeze for a couple hours in solitude.  Managed to squeeze out this little sketch as well!

Fox Sports West Prepzone 2014 launched!!

Happy Thursday!

Fox Sports West is covering the High School Football Games this fall in the show Prepzone 2014!!  I was in charge of building all the school logos that are competing against each other and placing them in prebuilt interstitials for all the on air graphics that introduce the teams and players.  I have been learning so much about building and styling logos in Cinema 4D, and it's extremely fun since I love being busy.

Check out the games at http://www.foxsports.com/west/prepzone-stream!

Taking It Slow

This one is inspired by my boyfriend, who LOVES to read.  Put him in a Barnes and Nobles, and he will drop all work and just read all day, and I love that. He's good at just taking it slow and easy sometimes.  The other day while driving to Fox Sports, I stopped at a light and just notice what a flurry everyone was in, in their suits and stuff. I wanted to capture that in the style and colors. Hence came this idea :)
